Spokane County Fire District #3 covers approximate 565 sq. miles or 360,000 acres in southwest Spokane County, the third largest fire district in the State of Washington. By virtue of the large size, there are many types of exposures that generate activity and challenges for the district. Bordering Spokane to the northwest which is an urban center the demographics taper to rural farming and ranching in the southwest.
The district includes 20 miles of Interstate Highway, 65 miles of State Primary Highway and approximate of 1300 miles of paved and unpaved county roads. Also included in this area is approximately 70 miles of railroad owned by six different owners. The boundaries surround Eastern Washington State University, Turnbull Wildlife Refuge, a State Prison and mental institution as well as borders Fairchild Air Force Base. Recreationally, there are six public lakes thousands of acres that are hunted each year.
